The Galveston and Texas History Center is home to many resources documenting African-American life in Galveston, from slavery, Juneteenth, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, to the present day.

A Texas Historical Commission marker at 28th and Seawall Blvd. honors Galveston’s African American beach lifeguards, who protected the community without pay until 1935 while also working other jobs to support their families.

Galveston’s Juneteenth exhibit “And Still We Rise…”, housed at the 1859 Ashton Villa, explores the impact of the 1865 emancipation announcement and the ongoing pursuit of “absolute equality.”

"Galveston’s African American Museum is a highlight of District One. Among the exhibits are images of trailblazers born on the island who have made significant contributions to the community.

This marker commemorates the reading of General Order No. 3 and symbolizes the ongoing journey toward equality.

The Nia Cultural Center promotes community empowerment and celebrates the legacy of Juneteenth through art, culture, education, and engagement in its historic birthplace.

Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1848 by formerly enslaved people, played a pivotal role in Texas history as a site where General Order #3 was read, marking the end of slavery in the state. Despite enduring natural disasters like the Great Fire of 1885 and the 1900 storm, Reedy Chapel remains a powerful symbol of resilience and faith, continuing to serve the community and host annual Juneteenth celebrations.
