    Overview: Write a thesis-driven essay that argues your own position on one of the topics discussed in previous weeks. In this essay, you need to argue your own point of view about one of our topics rather than simply agree or disagree with what others have written, you will need to argue your own ideas about this topic. 

    Topics: You should choose a topic from the themes handout (also found on pages 99-103 in Arguing About Literature.) You can choose a topic not included on this list, but you must get permission from your professor first!

    Examples: 

    • Gender or Sexual Orientation 

    • Ethnic Background 

    • Social Class 

    • Divisions, conflicts, and multiple forces within the self 

    • Boundaries 

    • Material Things 

    • Family or Friendships 

    • Rebellion or War 

    • Mental Health 

    • The role of performance in everyday life 

    • Religious beliefs  

    • Desire and pleasure 

    • The body 

    • Memory 

    • Politics and ideologies 

    • Carnivals and other festivities 

    • Distinctions between what is universal and what is historically or culturally specific 

    • Relations between what is public and private, the social, and the personal 

    • Relations between “high” culture and “low” culture 

    Research:

    • One (1+) primary source (from our textbook or elsewhere, if approved) 
    • Three (3+) articles (secondary sources) from the GC Library database, EBSCOhost. 

    • One (1) digital media (such as a video from the Academic Video Online database in the GC Library, TEDtalk, or Crash Course) 

    • One (1) article or ebook from Whitecaps OneSearch 

    • One (1) definition from a reputable online dictionary (such as Merriam-Webster)
